How to Install Wallpaper Around a Room?

Learn how to install wallpaper across a full room for a seamless, professional finish.

Updated over 2 months ago

When wallpapering an entire room, it's important to plan your installation to achieve the cleanest, most seamless look possible. Unlike feature walls, full room projects require extra attention to panel flow, pattern alignment, and corner handling.

Here’s how to do it right:

1. Treat the Room as One Continuous Surface

When wallpapering multiple walls, you should think of the room as one continuous canvas.

Instead of stopping and starting fresh at each wall, panels should flow naturally around corners, maintaining the alignment of the pattern from one wall to the next.

At each inside corner, the remainder of the last panel should wrap onto the next wall, and the next full panel should be installed beside it.

This approach ensures that the design stays consistent and professional across the entire room.

2. Choose a Discreet Starting Point

Select a starting point that is less visible, such as behind a door, near a corner, or on a wall that will have large furniture.

This way, if there is a visible seam or a narrow final panel at the end of the installation, it will be in a low-visibility spot.

Choosing a smart starting point also allows you to better control how the pattern flows throughout the room.

3. Calculate Your Total Wall Width

To determine how much wallpaper you need, add up the total width of all the walls you plan to cover.

Divide the total width by the width of one panel (for example, 24.5 inches) and round up to the nearest full panel.

This calculation ensures you have enough panels to wrap the entire room without breaking the flow of the pattern between walls.

Always plan a little extra to account for trimming and wall imperfections.

4. Allow for Minor Loss at Corners

Walls are rarely perfectly straight.

At each inside corner, it’s normal to lose about half an inch to an inch due to minor adjustments needed for a tight fit.

Because of this, it’s strongly recommended to order at least one extra panel beyond your initial calculation.

Having an extra panel provides flexibility if additional trimming or pattern matching adjustments are needed.

5. Match the Pattern Carefully at Corners

When wrapping around corners, focus on aligning the pattern as seamlessly as possible.

Small shifts can happen, but careful adjustments at corners can keep the overall look consistent.

If necessary, slight pattern adjustments are best made in less visible areas rather than on a main wall that catches the eye.

A well-matched corner gives a professional, polished finish that feels intentional and high-end.

Quick Summary

  • Install wallpaper continuously across walls without restarting.

  • Start at a discreet location to hide final seams.

  • Calculate based on total room width, not per wall.

  • Order extra panels to account for corner adjustments.

  • Focus on pattern alignment at each corner for the best finish.
