Can I apply wallpaper on textured walls?

A full guide to prepping textured walls for peel-and-stick wallpaper, including options for better adhesion and what to avoid.

Here’s how to give your wallpaper the best chance at sticking beautifully:

1. Clean the Wall

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild cleaner to remove any dust, grease, or residue. Let it dry completely before moving to the next step.

2. Smooth it Out (if possible)

If your texture is light (like orange peel), it might be fine as-is.
If it’s heavier (like knockdown, stucco, or popcorn), the wallpaper might not stick well or will show every bump.

Your options:

  • Lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper

  • Apply a skim coat (thin layer of joint compound) to flatten the texture

  • Use a wall liner as a smooth base (self-adhesive or paste-the-wall options both work)

3. Prime if Needed

  • If your wall is freshly painted, wait at least 2–3 weeks before installing wallpaper

  • Some people use satin/semi-gloss paint or a wallpaper primer to help with grip and future removal — totally optional, but helpful

4. Use E-Z Hang Spray (Optional but Magical)

This spray is amazing for giving textured walls a bit more tackiness. It helps the wallpaper stick better and reposition easier.

Just:

  • Clean your wall

  • Spray a light, even coat of E-Z Hang

  • Let it dry for 10 minutes

  • Apply your wallpaper like normal

It’s renter-friendly, easy to clean, and won’t leave residue behind.

5. Test First!

Always order a sample and leave it on your wall for a few days.
If it starts peeling or shows every bump, it might not be the best match without more prep.

❗️Important: We can’t guarantee adhesion on textured walls and we do not accept returns if your wallpaper peels off due to texture issues.
